Attribution Without Drama: A Decision-First Framework for eCommerce Teams

Attribution Without Drama: A Decision-First Framework for eCommerce Teams

Attribution becomes political when the model decides who gets credit. But credit isn't the goal—better decisions are. Learn our decision-first framework.

The Attribution Trap

Teams often waste hours arguing over which channel "deserves" credit for a sale. The Facebook team points to their ad manager, the Google team points to GA4, and the email team claims they drove the final click. This is the attribution trap: focusing on credit instead of incrementality.

A Decision-First Approach

Instead of asking "who gets credit?", ask "what decision are we trying to make?". If you are deciding whether to scale top-of-funnel video ads, a last-click model is useless.

  • For Top-of-Funnel: Use Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) or geo-holdout testing to measure incrementality.
  • For Mid-Funnel: Use multi-touch attribution or post-purchase surveys (e.g., "How did you hear about us?").
  • For Bottom-Funnel: Use last-click models for immediate optimization, but understand their limitations.

Triangulation

The truth is never found in a single dashboard. The best brands triangulate data from ad platforms, GA4, and post-purchase surveys to make directional decisions.
